What is Awk Phansa Read?

This holiday celebrates the end of Buddhist lent, which lasted for three months. It also celebrates the end of rainy season. The last day of lent falls on the full moon of the 11th month.

Why three months of fasting?

The Buddhists commemorate the day Buddha descended to earth after three months of visiting his mother in heaven. When he came back, his followers celebrated with gifts and food.

How do they celebrate?

After sunset, a gigantic procession will take place in Luang Prabang. Thousands of people come out to the streets and watch the beautiful banana-leaf boats decorated with candles and flowers.

At the end of the night, the boats are all put on the Mekong river. This way, they push the bad moments of the past year away and welcome the good luck.
