It’s the most beautiful waterfall in the world. And I’m not exaggerating, promise. About 30 km from the center of Luang Prabang in Laos you can find Kuang Si Falls. The waterfall is nothing less than spectacular. Is it possible to fall in love with a waterfall (asking for a friend)?
Free The Bears
Upon entering, you pay 20.000KIP (€2) and the first thing you see, is a shelter for bears. Free The Bears saves bears that were imprisoned on bile farms from the hands of evil poachers. Free The Bears gets nothing from the entrance fee thus lives on donations. So if you can miss some KIP…
Walk walk walk
Then the walk (15 minutes) to the waterfalls begins! Good news: you can jump right in most of the swimming holes. Some are considered sacred, so obey the signs. And the water is wonderfully cool, a welcome change. Before you get to the real big ass waterfall, you pass so many baby waterfalls. There are changing huts and vendors selling snacks and drinks as well.
Then, the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Kuang Si, ladies and gentlemen! 50 meters high, super impressive and turquoise water everywhere. How is this real?
And then. For all you daredevils out there. Next to the main waterfall Kuang Si Falls, you’ll see a hidden, small road upwards. It is extremely steep with very high steps, and yes, I died about three times going up. But once you’re there: shiiiiit. Very calm and very paradise-like. You’re literally at the top of the waterfall. It’s the most special swim I’ve ever had.
So, worth the visit?
Yes, yup, ja, si, oui. You can easily spend hours swimming, chilling, eating, crying because it’s so pretty, … The earlier you go, the quieter it is. Get yourself a tuk-tuk that gets you up there and picks you up again for 30.000-50.000 KIP (3 to 5 euro). Or you can arrange something with your guesthouse.
