Now, it wasn’t a tough battle. Let me tell you: you’ll fall in love at the first glance. Ladies and gentlemen: it’s time to meet Wat Rong Khun or the White Temple in Chiang Rai.
The renovation of the temple started in ’97, thanks to Ajarn Chalermchai Kositpipat. A well-known artist who turned the temple into his life’s work. According to him, it would take another 90 years before it’s really finished. The man does not accept large donations but pays everything himself (about 40M baht!) because he wants full control over it. Dedication!
The biggest difference between this one and the other temples is, of course, the color. No gold and red here, but a lot of white and silver. Based on the pureness of Buddha. The small pieces of silver everywhere represent the wisdom of Buddha that shines throughout the universe. The goal of the artist was to give every visitor a feeling of peace and happiness.
As far as I am concerned: definitely a must if you’re in the area. There’s not much more to do in Chiang Rai, so I wouldn’t go for more than one night!
